A gateway to Cooloola sand country
Cooloola Village is a practical starting point for the wider Cooloola Recreation Area in Great Sandy National Park. This is Country with an enduring connection for Traditional Owners; travel with respect for the environment, wildlife and other visitors. Queensland Parks’ Cooloola overview (opens in a new tab) is the best place to begin with current park information.
Choose your way through
Cooloola can be explored on foot, by paddlecraft, by boat or in a suitable four-wheel drive. The official things-to-do guide (opens in a new tab) describes short walks, the longer Cooloola Great Walk, water-based options and day-use areas. Treat any untreated water before drinking.
Drive only when prepared
Many sand tracks are for high-clearance 4WDs only. Beach and designated-track travel requires a current vehicle access permit; arrange it before entering. Queensland Government’s permit guidance (opens in a new tab) confirms the requirement, while the official safety page (opens in a new tab) explains access, track and beach considerations.
Check conditions close to departure
Cooloola includes remote areas with intermittent mobile reception, and access can change with weather, tides, fire, sand movement and maintenance. Check the official alerts and conditions report before you leave, carry appropriate navigation and communication equipment, and adapt plans to on-site directions.
